Lauren’s Baby Shower

A Kentucky Derby Celebration

The Kentucky Derby has a way of making any room feel like a party. When Lauren’s family asked us to help welcome their newest arrival on race day, we leaned in completely — hats encouraged, florals abundant, and the Columbia River sparkling just outside.

Lauren had ridden horses. Her grandmother had too. So we built the room around that story. Vintage equestrian trophies and riding awards became vessels for arrangements in blush, yellow, and apricot sherbet. Small horses gathered on the tables alongside macaroons in the exact same colorway, each one finished with a tiny gold horse. Carolina-style centerpieces, layered and textural, dressed the bar top tables. Bud vases were scattered throughout. And in the restroom — because the details matter everywhere — flowers.

At the gift table, a floral horseshoe became the focal point. It was the first time I had hand-cut a formed floral element, shaping the form myself before building it bloom by bloom. A flower curtain hung in the doorway, suspending blossoms at every height to greet guests as they arrived. A styled welcome table with signage and a sweet posy set the tone before anyone had even found their seat.

The grandma-to-be had arranged for entertainment that brought the room completely alive — laughter, games, and the kind of afternoon energy that makes everyone forget to check their phone. The afternoon sun reflected off the river. Guests spilled out onto the deck. And Lauren, glowing, celebrated her finish line in exactly the way she deserved.
